Sozopol
Sozopol is one of the most famous summer tourist destinations in Bulgaria. It is located in the southern part of the Burgas Bay, 35 km from the city of Burgas. Sozopol is the oldest city in this region. The story. it is long and interesting, and there are many places you can visit.
The old name of the city is Apollonia - after the ancient Greek god Apollo, who was considered a healer and patron of emigrants. After that, the name was changed to Sozopolis, translated from Greek it means city of healing and healing. Later, after the Liberation, it adopted its current name - Sopozol.
The city is divided into Old and New parts, with the Old Town being particularly noteworthy. It has been declared an archaeological and architectural reserve. There you can see about 180 old houses, whose stone and wooden buildings will captivate you completely. Every house has its own story. Around the Old Town, you can see the preserved part of the former fortress wall, with which the town was surrounded in the Middle Ages.
Museums in Sozopol
The Archaeological Museum is one of the sights that should not be missed. Founded in 1978, you will find artefacts from different parts of Sozopol and its surroundings.
In the Ethnographic Museum, you can find many items from the history of Bulgarian life and culture.
Located in the building of the so-called Old School is the Art Gallery, where you can see paintings, graphics and sculptures from various materials by Bulgarian and foreign authors.
Very close to the Old Town of Sozopol is the Island of Saint Ivan. It is the largest of the five islands located on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast. In 1985, remains of two churches, a royal residence and a library were discovered there, as well as the relics of St. John the Baptist. About 70 species of birds can be found on the island, many of which are included in the Red Book of Bulgaria.
There are many churches and chapels in Sozopol that you can visit. The church "St. George the Victorious" is the largest in Sozopol. Part of the relics of Saint John the Baptist are kept there. The church " The Holy Virgin" is one of the oldest in the city, which is considered to have existed since 1482. It is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
The chapels that you may see in the past were churches that were destroyed during the Turkish slavery. Chapels were built in their places to remind us of the past and to awaken Christianity in us. Some of them are "Saint Athanasius", "Saint Demetrius", "Ascension" and others.
Among the natural attractions, you should not miss the national park "Ropotamo" and the "Water Lilies", "Snake Island" and "Arcutino" reserves, which are located along or at the mouth of the Ropotamo River. These are exceptional places that are protected sites.
In the Ropotamo Park, you will have the opportunity to see unique creations of nature such as the mouth of the Ropotamo River, rock phenomena, the Arcutino marsh and many other things. It is located 50 km south of Burgas.
The "Water Lilies" Reserve is so named because there you can find many water lilies and marsh snowdrops.
The "Snake Island" reserve is so named because of the presence of numerous water snakes. It is a small island near the coast of the participation of the river Ropotamo. It cannot be visited as it is surrounded by an iron fence.
The "Arcutino" reserve is organized around the Arcutino marsh, which is where the name of the reserve comes from. There are also water lilies, papyrus and reeds. Of course, there are also migratory and waterfowl.
There are many beautiful beaches in Sozopol, both small and very large.
From north to south, the beaches you can visit are Gradina beach, Zlatna Ribka beach, Harmanite beach, Bamboo beach, Paradise Bay beach, Smokinya beach, Kavatsi beach, Driver's beach, Arkutino beach. Some beaches have very fine sand, others coarser, some are suitable for diving, on others the water is crystal clear, the shores are shallow and suitable for families with small children. Restaurants have been built on most of the beaches, but there are still undeveloped beaches for fans of pristine beaches.

Ravadinovo Castle is located 2 km from Sozopol to the village of Ravadinovo. There you can enjoy beautiful landscaping, exotic trees, plants and flowers. It has several lakes inhabited by freshwater fish. You can see a large number of bronze and marble sculptures, summer cinema, equestrian stable, fountain of wishes and many other beauties. The castle is fabulous and gorgeous and certainly worth a visit.
